Hypnosis for Positive Change

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness characterized by deep relaxation, heightened suggestibility, and focused attention.  You have complete control over your mind and body; you are in a heightened state of suggestibility and awareness, which allows the subconscious mind to be open to receive positive suggestions in order to make the desired behavioral changes.

Hypnosis can be helpful in overcoming fears and phobias such as fear of public speaking, test anxiety, and sports performance; also useful in stop smoking, weight control, memory and concentration, confidence building and pain control. In fact, in 1985, the American Cancer Society and Dr. David Spiegel, M.D., printed a professional education publication, entitled, "The Use of Hypnosis in Controlling Cancer Pain". Within this publication Dr. Spiegel states, "Persons in the hypnotic state are not controlled by the hypnotist. They are open to having their experience structured by the hypnotist". This is achieved by cognitively discussing what the client hopes to achieve during their session. In the conclusion of this publication, Dr. Spiegel says, “It is ironic that a technique long associated with fantasies of losing control should be so helpful in enhancing it. The intense concentration, interpersonal sensitivity, and mind-body control that characterize hypnosis make it an empirically grounded, practical tool for use with cancer”.
